Until 1976, he was one of the greatest, a true genius. Then stress, the wild life of a rock star, drugs, excesses, and vices of all kinds undermined both his compositional and performing abilities. But to judge him for what he did after '76 or after Led Zeppelin would be too unkind. I prefer to consider a musician for what he achieved in his prime, which spans from "Dazed and Confused" to "Achilles Last Stand."
