Kubrick said about 2001 that if anyone understood it, he had failed. The same can be said of many things in Lynch: in "Inland Empire," for example, there is nothing to understand, it is simply an aesthetic experience and as such should be evaluated (depending on different sensibilities). Generally, those who, in front of an artistic expression, whether it be a painting or a sculpture, first seek the title or the subject are taking the wrong approach. The same goes for directors like Lynch.
