Before securing a proper contract, this group of improvisation and style monsters produced a potpourri of live and studio recordings, where, among other things, some of their biggest hits (both commercially and in terms of fan-favorite anthems) were already present.

Indeed, the band seized every opportunity to perform between universities and various festivals in the first two years of their formation, honing their technique and dynamics. By the time they made it big with Under The Table And Dreaming, their fan base had already been attentive for some time; so much so that the initial hints at the songs during the first tour already elicited roars of approval.

The songs that Matthews proposed attracted and won over his companions when they were still engaged in other projects, among the venues of Charlottesville.

The marching ants are us pedestrians. Thousands of ants massed on the bark of a tree, ready to give their lives to protect a movement older and greater than each of us. And we don't even think about the real reason for the rush we have, if there even is one.

The heart can't be commanded, nor can the DNA apparently, as the South African roots of the young songwriter emerge among the lyrics and the guitar insights often linked to the native musical tradition.
Recently, for instance, was the consequence of the heavy looks of disapproval aimed at a mixed couple by a large portion of the community. Dave Matthews sings about his indifference but underscores in the choruses an oppressive presence—in intention—for his love experience.
The adolescence spent in Johannesburg amidst the refusal to obey arms and the dramas of apartheid; themes that are more present and inspirational in Before These Crowded Streets.

A traffic light in the continuous and relentless bustling. Broken lines, prohibitions, and horns sounded restlessly. No one more than the Dave Matthews Band has managed to give their compositions an urban character that allows them to examine the emotional traits of everyday life with extreme naturalness. Once with folkloric sweetness and another with the rhythm of a world music thirsty for dances.
