Well, here we are again! The second album of the most famous dance duo in France. And it's a whole other music! Yes, because unlike "Homework", this 61-minute album feels less physical and more sentimental. In short, let's be clear, it doesn't have anything to do with the first work! After 4 years, the two robots decided to change their music by inventing their own artistic death: oh yes! Just like that, burnt to ashes in their own recording studio on 09/09/1999. Reviving, they changed style, creating a pop-house album which, as time passed, became another masterpiece.
But now let's take a closer look at the 14 tracks in question. First of all, it's worth mentioning that the album feels as sparse as the previous one: the duo's name on the cover just like before and a booklet with the lyrics (and what lyrics! Finally well-structured as opposed to the usual four words).
This concept album opens immediately with their first single "One More Time", which in my opinion seems to be the only dull note because it's too homemade and direct (the usual bombshell that kicks off the dance and eventually tires!). The rest, however, is all too beautiful: the best response to describe the feelings that bond man and machine.
"Aerodynamic" is already memorable from the opening with the famous "Back In Black" bells. A throbbing in the ear of virtuosic guitar with a stall phase in the middle of futuristic keyboards! Then come the two most significant songs of the album: "Digital Love" and "Harder Better Faster Stronger". These two tracks symbolize in the best possible way the man/machine love I previously described. The first is the ballad par excellence of their entire career, enriched by the famous final explosion of dance/love energy, and the second represents the rebellion of the machines. And right here comes the big question: real guitar or fake? Who knows! Either way, listen to it and listen to it again because it's beastly disco! At this point, we find ourselves in the most dance phase of the album, with "Crescendolls", "Nightvision" (a pause), "Superheroes", and "High Life". The evocative message of these 4 tracks is almost nil, but the approach to the house music world is still masterful. And now the second love song of the album: "Something About Us". Beautiful, tender-hearted, and easy listening! Dedicated to the most tender-hearted.
Closing this parenthesis, it seems that everything is transforming: it seems that the love phase is closing to make room for something very experimental, perhaps the most interesting part of the entire album. Yes, the spatial phase! With "Voyager" and "Veridis Quo", a relaxation phase opens! Enjoy it to the fullest! The dance resumes with "Short Circuit" and "Face To Face": we can call them bizarre, but at least with the last one, the vocals return! Oh yes, speaking of which! The vocals in this last phase are hip hop rhythm, unlike the first where everything has another more sentimental face. So we can notice a double truth from the artists. "Too Long"? Too long! But it perfectly hits the conclusion of this extraordinary record.
So! In conclusion, our heroes made it by showing another side of their music and here the flashes of genius are indeed noticeable. More crafted compared to the acclaimed "Homework", "Discovery" represents another fundamental point of their career. Interesting yet lively at the same time for those who want to approach the world of French Touch, and then if we want to add another 2.5 million copies sold and a whole Japanese animated movie that cost millions of dollars, everything becomes astonishing.
Now even robots have a soul! Long live Daft Punk!
The sung songs are useless; 'One More Time' is a Saturday night song, instead sung by Romanthony (who is he???), here also co-producer (with a terrible voice à la Eiffel 65!) who even manages to ruin 'Too Long' at the end.
Apart from self-references and quotes from Kraftwerk and 80’s electronics, the album is bad, we have listened to it multiple times waiting for it to grab us, but it lacks character.
Daft Punk manages to do with this "Discovery" more than just make people dance; they make heads sway to the beat.
"Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem" is a childhood operation so that everyone can accept themselves for the child they once were.
