THE REVIEW

Finally it's out! (the fans will say, and I am one of them); what a drag, yet another boring and effeminate album (the hard rock lovers will say). Which of these is right is hard to tell, especially since the critics themselves are divided: the English newspapers have praised the album, while the New York Times called Coldplay "the most unbearable band of the last ten years."
There has been a lot, maybe too much, discussion about this CD, and according to many, the weight of responsibility on the band was felt in the making of the CD, resulting in it being too heavy.
My opinion, on the other hand, is that X & Y certainly can't be called a masterpiece, but it is a very good album. The sound has remained intact, Chris Martin's voice is melodic as usual, and the final result does not deviate from previous works. Probably among the three, this one would deserve a bronze medal, but it is known that Coldplay's works require a long listen before being judged.

The album, in my opinion, offers us several gems: Square One and Low are the most rock tracks and perhaps those that best define Coldplay's new sound; What If, X & Y, and The Hardest Part are simply splendid; Fix You is perhaps the best track on the album, and the Ghost Track is a pleasant surprise (dedicated to Johnny Cash).
In short, X & Y is the worthy successor to A Rush of Blood to the Head and above all, it is a typically Coldplay album, and as Chris Martin ironically pointed out in a recent interview with MTV: "It's not Shit!"

This flood of graceful melodies... is the artistic representation of the inability to reinvent oneself.

Even when they try to experiment... the result is amazing: it sounds exactly like 'Clocks,' in a stadium version.

Last Friday, when the first notes of "Square One" played, something inside me clicked...

By the end of the CD, there were twelve masterpieces!

"In this 'pop-rock-melancholic' domain, Coldplay are the best."

"The sweetness of 'Fix You' (the ending of the song is splendid)... can suffice and satisfy those expecting a regression from 'A Rush of Blood to the Head.'"

"X&Y is a sequence of pleasant tracks, but they sound a bit like a tennis player with the 'short arm syndrome,' the fear of daring, fear of taking risks."

Despite all this, Coldplay manages to produce pleasant melodies, of excellent and refined melodic structure, supported by Chris Martin’s evocative voice.

Coldplay's ability to write excellent immediate and direct melodies, without ever being banal.

Chris Martin’s voice, simply gentle, makes even the simply nice or mediocre songs better.
