Coldplay: "X & Y"... A MASTERPIECE!!!
There are moments in the music world when something disrupts the balance and makes you clearly realize that there are artists of "superior" quality. I've always regretted the fact (given my young age!) that I didn't witness firsthand the release of memorable CDs in music history (I think of "Dark Side" by Pink Floyd, "Sgt. Peppers" by the Beatles, "Joshua Tree" by U2, etc.), I've always thought about how wonderful it would have been to go and buy one of these CDs, go home, turn on the stereo still unaware of what was about to happen and then be inundated by "unattainable" level music. Well, that day has finally come! Last Friday, when the first notes of "Square One" played, something inside me clicked... Well, I'll just say that halfway through the CD I had to take a break because I couldn't handle the continuous stream of emotions anymore! Halfway through the CD, there were already six masterpieces! "What If" sweet and dreamy, "White Shadows"... a stunning pull with an organ finish that introduces the gem... "Fix You"! And then "Talk" and "X & Y"...
Needless to say, by the end of the CD, there were twelve masterpieces! So, I allow myself a piece of advice... buy this CD! Don't burn it, don't download it, because having a copy of this album at home is essential and money will never be better spent! I already liked Coldplay, but with this album, their leap in quality is astonishing! And even those who don't know them, trust me, the music of this album is epic, warm, and imposing, capable of completely enveloping the listener! I'm simply out of words to describe this CD... great Chris Martin, great Coldplay... for those like me who will be at the Verona arena on their only Italian date, see you there!!!
P.S. For those who have listened to it, any opinion is welcome, I've given mine and I assure you I haven't exaggerated at all!!!!!
This flood of graceful melodies... is the artistic representation of the inability to reinvent oneself.
Even when they try to experiment... the result is amazing: it sounds exactly like 'Clocks,' in a stadium version.
X & Y certainly can’t be called a masterpiece, but it is a very good album.
Fix You is perhaps the best track on the album, and the Ghost Track is a pleasant surprise.
"In this 'pop-rock-melancholic' domain, Coldplay are the best."
"The sweetness of 'Fix You' (the ending of the song is splendid)... can suffice and satisfy those expecting a regression from 'A Rush of Blood to the Head.'"
"X&Y is a sequence of pleasant tracks, but they sound a bit like a tennis player with the 'short arm syndrome,' the fear of daring, fear of taking risks."
Despite all this, Coldplay manages to produce pleasant melodies, of excellent and refined melodic structure, supported by Chris Martin’s evocative voice.
Coldplay's ability to write excellent immediate and direct melodies, without ever being banal.
Chris Martin’s voice, simply gentle, makes even the simply nice or mediocre songs better.
