The Profile

Coal Chamber is an American nu metal band from Los Angeles formed in 1993 by vocalist Dez Fafara and guitarist Miguel “Meegs” Rascón. They broke out with Coal Chamber (1997), expanded their palette on Chamber Music (1999), and delivered Dark Days (2002), later reuniting for Rivals (2015). Known for the singles Loco and Sway, and for covering Peter Gabriel’s Shock the Monkey with Ozzy Osbourne.

Core members: Dez Fafara (vocals), Meegs Rascón (guitars), Rayna Foss (bass), Mike Cox (drums); signed to Roadrunner Records during their classic era; notable tracks include Loco, Sway, and Tyler’s Song; Ozzy Osbourne appears on their Shock the Monkey cover.

Three reviews frame Coal Chamber as nu metal purists: heavy, downtuned riffs, industrial shades, and dark lyric themes. The 1997 debut brings psychotic groove; Chamber Music (1999) adds electronics and mood. Demos show a rawer edge. Ozzy guests on their Peter Gabriel cover, Shock the Monkey. Overall tone: appreciative with minor caveats.
