Brescia... a city, in the eyes of many, anonymous, gray, industrial... The Bresciani... people of few words (strictly in dialect!), naturally inclined to hard work and little inclined to the amenities of life. Or not?
Belonging to the described reality, I cannot deny the stereotype, but almost twenty years ago, in 1993, a revolution hit the Leonessa: Giancarlo Cinelli, known as Charlie Cinelli, together with the English bassist Alan Farrington and the drummer Cesare Valbusa, gave life to Charlie & The Cats, the ultimate Brescian dialect rock band! "Greatest Tits" is the first album from the Cats, a work that exceeds over an hour in length, in which the three experienced musicians, all over 30, can give free rein to their irreverent creativity.
It could vulgarly be described as demented rock but they are much, much more! Within the album, indeed, the trio successfully tackles various genres: from straight rock (La pappatoia, La ranza, Osti) to the most slapped funky (Get Down), with glimpses of reggae (Little Girl) and engaging rock and roll-similar blues (El papagalì), not to mention the more delicate songs (Ninna nanna del malghese, Attimpuri, Passera) and, believe it or not, there are even two ballads! (Il film siamo noi, Due in uno). The picture is completed by songs with an effectively demented aftertaste, such as Kerahadebala ketaghetadoh and Distrattamente, but, to be honest, no track is to be taken seriously. What makes the difference are the lyrics, partly in dialect, in Italian, in English, funny and eccentric enough, with the merit of never descending into the grossest vulgarity.
Beyond the general hilarity that permeates the entire album, there is something serious: the music. We are not faced with the renowned Elii but it can be stated with confidence that the Cats know their stuff: Valbusa, a jazz-trained drummer, proves to be skilled and creative even when dealing with a static genre like rock; Farrington is a bassist with exceptional skills, versatile and good behind the microphone too; and then there is him, Charlie, professionally a bassist but simultaneously engaged on the guitar, keyboards, and especially the voice. An exceptionally flamboyant character, considered a sort of God within the Brescian music scene, Charlie forcefully leads the Cats in the most beautiful musical adventure: it is no coincidence that Greatest Tits is the album most affectionately remembered by the public, rightfully so for the presence of some evergreens like Và Gina!, El papagalì, El gat de Paol, Nom al stadio and for the winning combination of quantity/quality.
Provincial passion and genuine creativity make "Greatest Tits" the true masterpiece of the Cats, an album that remains fresh and will make you spend over an hour in total carefree enjoyment. Make it yours!
