I write few reviews because I am more of a user of DeBaser (which allows me to discover and appreciate artists I would never have known) and also because the often preconceived arguments about artists and albums without minimally respecting others' opinions are not for me.
Another DeBaserian habit is to systematically slaughter almost all Italian artists, with very few exceptions. As I often say, I'm not a kid, and I've listened to and bought a lot of music, and I find that the current Italian scene is not so disastrous, now as in the past (De André, Fossati, De Gregori, Battiato) currently as an Italian artist after the losses of Lucio Battisti (a musical genius) and De André (artist poet who will end up in history books) I adore Caparezza.
I find him to be a unique artist, with a style all his own that combines the ability to write unique and prophetic lyrics to speak uncomfortable truths, with music that is anything but trivial, and has brought the hip-hop genre to the masses. "Le Dimensioni del mio caos," the latest work from the capa, is an album I've listened to nonstop since it came out. It is a concept album, where a girl from 1968 is transported to our days, the album deals with very current and very sad themes such as unemployment, the daily brainwashing by TV, "revisited" history, waste disposal, the desire to appear on TV at any cost starting from childhood, leading up to "Eroe," a true new proletarian anthem, and ending with "Bonobo power," a track almost entirely made of percussion. The ironic titles go hand in hand with sharp lyrics that spare no one (like Pulcinella) "Ilaria condizionata" "Pimpami la storia" "La grande opera" (read the bridge on the strait), "io diventerò qualcuno" (TV conditioning) "vieni a ballare in Puglia" (accidents at work) in short, regardless of everyone's tastes, I believe he deserves recognition for being the only one to denounce these things, and not just in this album. The themes of racism, "vengo dalla luna," "inno verdano," "nessuna razza" can also be found in previous albums (Verità supposte). Some lines in his lyrics are lightning strikes; just listen to what he says.
Live, he is phenomenal. Sorry for the initial rant. Until next time.
In nomine libertatis vincula edificamus in nomine veritatis mendacia efferimus dio si chiama zappa frank vincent voi siete artisti fate i cerchi di grano noi: cacca nello spazio.
The entire album is played with no samples, even though electronics are present.
It results in a terrible portrait of a falsely 'committed' person.
If you don't like Caparezza, hit that back button on your browser and go to another review.
"Vieni a ballare in Puglia" is a song that overwhelms you completely.
Caparezza is the only Italian artist with originality and creativity, always maintaining a clear distance from commercialism.
His courage to clearly say how things truly are in Italy is to be appreciated.
He is one of the few Italian artists who keeps Italian music active.
The album is also a sound novel, and it's much more instrument-driven than the others, with fewer vulgar jokes and more focus on social issues.
"Le dimensioni del mio caos is a really great work...it’s a concept album, and a concept in 2008 wasn’t a trivial thing."
"Some passages are worthy of framing... ‘Pimpami la storia’ gives chills for how, alas, true it is; ‘La grande opera’ is a monumental track."
