In 1973, this album by a 24-year-old young man was released, marking his first entry into the music market.
The record went almost unnoticed, but now that we know who Springsteen is, it is right to rediscover this first work of his. Inside the album, there are some authentic gems like "Growin' Up" (although the acoustic version contained in the quadruple box set "Tracks" is even better) or "Lost In the Flood".
The influence of Bob Dylan is tremendously evident in the lyrics. Like him, Springsteen manages to insert a myriad of words into a single verse, evoking fantastic images that diverge from what appears to be the central theme of the song. An unsettled record, perhaps still unripe, but already crowded with those characters that will populate Springsteen's songs in the future: subjects searching for something, fleeing toward who knows what, with just one certainty: doubt.
"Lost In The Flood can easily be considered among Springsteen’s 15 best songs."
"I recommend this as the album to start with to appreciate the resources of this extraordinary singer-songwriter."
"It is clear to call 'Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.' a sufficiently defined and castigated work by hesitant production."
"When the first record came out, people were scandalized there was no electric guitar!"
