Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) was an English composer, conductor and pianist, a central figure in 20th‑century music. He revitalized English opera with works such as Peter Grimes, Billy Budd and The Turn of the Screw, and achieved worldwide acclaim with the War Requiem. He co-founded the Aldeburgh Festival and frequently collaborated with tenor Peter Pears.
