From the very beginning of her career, the central and recurring theme in Anna Calvi's music is undoubtedly the battle of the sexes, but also sex itself (especially in this new album).

The Londoner with Italian roots—frequently compared to Pj Harvey—enjoys great responses and a devoted fan base who see in her the style of Maria Callas and historical muses in general.

Comparisons, as we all know, are both a blessing and a curse (more of a curse, in my opinion).

But without a doubt, it should be emphasized that the excellent tracks are full of class and creativity.

I would add that in 2018, I find the continuous reminiscence of the past in art, in general, more than obvious. After all, we've been on this earth for millions of years.

In recent interviews, she states her intent to distance herself from stereotypes and even more from gender. According to the singer-songwriter, there is no reason for which a person should be sexually labeled (a bit like what Morrissey declared in the eighties, if you will, and I agree with her idea).

A striking red cover, makeup, and a lot of sensuality.

Hunter features arrangements that gracefully oscillate between pop and rock n' roll.

The adventures narrated are primarily sexual in nature, ranging from calls for human warmth to declarations of "power" (Alpha).

In my opinion, the best tracks are Chain and Away.

The latter is the most sparse and ethereal; a timeless song.

Is Eno right to claim that Calvi is the best female artist to emerge since the days of Patti Smith?
