As a particularly inspired critic once wrote, listening to Moon Safari by Air is like looking at the world through a glass of champagne, and the electro-pop freshness of this work confirms this apt metaphor.
The French duo with this work breathes new life into a certain type of electronic music that was disappearing, swallowed by the "hard" sound from across the channel from groups like Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, or Aphex Twin. In contrast, the sound of Air is diametrically opposite. Sparkling, clear, a breath of fresh air that shines a light on a respectable French electronic scene, also generating hordes of disciples/clones.
The album, which always maintains high levels, contains more than one gem, starting with the splendid and melancholic All I Need, one of the best pieces in their entire discography, to the instrumental Ce Matin-La and Le Voyage De Penelope, true easy-listening orchestrations. There are also post-modern reworkings of pop themes from the past, more or less recent (Sexy Boy above all). But it's not just pop that's renewed by Air, who draw heavily from jazz, funk, soul, and more.
In conclusion, with their "Moon Safari," Air opens the doors to a new way of making electronic music, becoming masters and inspirations to a generation of musicians (Cassius, Modjo, Etienne de Crecy, Saint Etienne to name a few).
This record will remain a testament to the decade it belongs to.
A 'contemporary' album that will presumably accompany me until retirement.
Moon Safari is a masterpiece! 10 perfect tracks, 10 musical jewels selected in a single album.
This album is like a drug! It creates addiction, you listen to it when you’re happy and when you’re sad.
