...in Italy it is still possible to make great rock music... Verdena are the practical demonstration of this statement of mine. I have been following them since their beginnings, and album after album they have shown continuous growth... they have always dared to challenge themselves, offering our ears music that is not easy to understand but precisely for this reason is damn intriguing.

"Requiem" is a synthesis of what Verdena have produced so far.... of course, the musical references of these now former "Italian heirs of Nirvana" (as they were labeled at the start) are abundant and range from Led Zeppelin ("muori delay" is a clear homage to the Plant band), to the more acid Pink Floyd, to the Beatles (Verdena's great love).

It ranges from tracks of devastating power ("don callisto", "non perdere l'acme eugenio", "isacco nucleare", "il caos striscinate"), to epic tracks ("il gulliver"); there's also room for sweetness ("angie", a sweetly distorted song, "trovami un modo semplice per uscirne", a very Beatles-esque song), Spanish rhythms ("canos"... beautiful).... it ends with the long and disconcerting "sotto prescrizione del dottor huxley": with this one, Verdena take us by the hand and accompany us in the depths of their madness...

A nod to the lyrics: more than lyrics, they are "visions" by Alberto Ferrari (the band's vocalist and guitarist), seemingly without any sense... also because the listener, helped by Verdena's music, then finds the meaning.

What else is there to say: this album must be listened to, carefully... you will discover, if you don't know them yet, a quirky band perhaps somewhat underrated in our musical landscape... fantastic.

'Requiem is a well-crafted album, yet at the same time, it sounds raw, it’s a work that sweats rock!'

With this fourth album, Verdena reaches complete maturity, fully utilizing the teachings of the sacred monsters of rock.

"'Requiem' is an aberration of such atrocious dimensions, as to trigger homophobic tendencies among the most gastro-sensitive."

"'Requiem,' or (intentionally!) the death of that little healthy and genuine that remained in our 'beautiful' country."

This new work... seems more aggressive and less catchy. Not that it’s a flaw, on the contrary... I believe it turned out to be a dirty and fascinating album.

After the success of Il Suicidio del Samurai, Verdena did not veer towards something softer and more accessible, but rather increased the dose of electric guitars and revived the evocative melodies.

With this album, they demonstrate significant growth and prove to be one of the best bands on the Italian scene.

Verdena manage to unravel what is inside our souls, describing our lives with violence, madness but also sweetness.

"They are the future of Italian rock’n’roll. Why stay behind?"
