I watch MTV rarely, very rarely, but I never miss this event: it's not that it's transcendent, but I'm interested in taking the pulse of the American commercial scene...
So, every year, once I turn on the TV, I enjoy the VMAs.
Honestly, this year, besides music of much higher caliber (and therefore neglected by this broadcaster), there haven't been any particularly interesting releases, so I was already prepared to see the triumph of hip-hop and other garbage.
However, it must be said that the many nominations received by Cash, Radiohead, and QOTSA left me a glimmer of hope... which was immediately extinguished!
The minor awards were cut from the ceremony, so I neither saw Radiohead nor QOTSA win... Cash was totally ignored by everyone and was the big loser of the evening.
The show was mediocre, with Chris Rock not even managing to make me smile, and the performances focused more on shocking with sapphic kisses (see Madonna and Britney Spears) and impressing with great choreography (see Beyonce) than on playing good songs well.
The only positive note was the performances by Coldplay (chilling, much better this live version of The Scientist than the one on the album) and Good Charlotte (at least they made me laugh). The show ended with Metallica (very far from their glory days), with a disgraceful medley spanning from Smells Like Teen Spirit to 7 Nation Army... chilling, but not in a good way!
For the record, the dominators of the evening were Timberlake (who also introduced Coldplay, saying they were the best band in the world: seems like an exaggeration...), Beyonce, and Coldplay with 3 awards each; Missy Elliot (video of the year, and best Hip-Hop) and 50 Cents (best rap and best new artist). Luckily, Eminem only got best video from a film.
What can we do, after all it's Emptyv!!!
