That things have not changed in Corgan's mind since the days of the horrible Zwan is clear from the "trash" video of "Tarantula", their look is nauseating with those white robes, Corgan now believes he is a messiah, but in reality, he is an artist who is done. This new one is ugly, gaudy, overly produced with five hundred overdubbed guitars, a plastic production that induces nausea, with at best one decent song, everything the same. Ugly starting with the cover.
Corgan, after the nonsense of recent years, revives the old group name to prove he's not done. It's a painful thing, and it hurts me to say it, especially since I consider Corgan and Chamberlain as the main axis of the Smashing that they were, but this recovery operation, failed from the premise, has nothing to do with the love for music. They probably calculated and saw that it's worthwhile to invest in resurrecting the glorious name since there are flocks of naïve fans ready to support the nostalgia operation. The pumpkins ended after the release of the beautiful "Adore", the rest is not Smashing Pumpkins, the production is absolutely inappropriate, with these hard rock guitar solos that have little to do with the Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe trying again to produce with Flood and Alan Moulder would have helped, or maybe not thinking about the disgusting "Machina".
In conclusion, the album seems all the same, lacking creative cues. In the long run, these relentless guitars on the same timbre without any ingenious variation tire, and then what are these cheesy chart choruses "starz we are starz we are", please! At Machina levels, goodbye Corgan, take up gardening.
This 'Zeitgeist' is the most inane, monotonous, and fake thing I've listened to in years.
It’s pointless to fill an album with thousands of effects and some guitar licks if the songs aren’t there, don’t exist, and it’s like listening to nothing for over an hour.
Corgan seems to have run out of ideas and wanting to continue being a rocker for who knows what reasons...
Everything seems perfectly polished without particularly salient moments, it’s all a mash of old rock tricks as old as my grandma.
After the fourth/fifth listen, you’ll realize it’s not like that, and even tracks such as "Doomsday", "Pomp and Circumstances"... can ultimately be counted among the best things by SP.
"United States", the most "extreme" track... will make you feel like you’re on vacation in Iraq, in the midst of a cheerful bombing.
"The beginning is overwhelming, 'Doomsday Clock' grows with each listen, with a dark riff and apocalyptic lyrics."
"'Bleeding the Orchid' is, in my opinion, the masterpiece of the entire album, embodying the soul of the best Smashing Pumpkins."
"United States is a sonic punch that raises the quality of this return by one of the groups that marked the '90s."
"The noisy, raw, distorted sound is different from previous albums, disappointing some old fans while trying to find a new audience."
