THE REVIEW

Year 1998: Theatre of Tragedy are at the peak of their popularity, when The Sins Of Thy Beloved, a Norwegian group devoted to Gothic Metal, gifts the world with their debut album: “Lake Of Sorrow.” But don't expect death riffing: The band offers us a celestial, ethereal, and paced album. The music aims to express sadness and desolation, but in a different way compared to Dismal Euphony and Tristania: if in the latter the desolation is also expressed with sound violence, The Sins Of Thy Beloved play in a truly delicate manner, with keyboards contributing to creating a soft and magical tapestry. Here too, we have the typical vocal alternation of Beauty And The Beast metal: the female voice of Anita, almost whispered, alternates with the male growl, which is actually quite scarce. The only instrument that dares to increase its volume is the violin, impetuous in its impact, yet sweet and romantic when necessary (see “Until The Dark”).

The tracks are all long, complex, and elaborate. The atmospheres created by the music are typically Nordic and dark (it might be because The Sins Of Thy Beloved are Norwegian...). The best tracks are the icy title track, the very sweet “Until The Dark,” the doom “All Alone,” and “Silent Pain” where the violin reaches unparalleled peaks in terms of emotions. Overall, a truly excellent, cold, and atmospheric album, light years away from the dozens of pseudo-gothic releases flooding the market. Recommended to all goth metal fans on the planet, but also to those approaching the genre for the first time.
Note: the rating would actually be a 4 and ½.
