THE REVIEW

I recently listened to a track by the Scottish SHAMEN, who blended a low-tier techno-house (in my opinion) achieving moderate success.

How time flies and how trends change, like a merry-go-round. If memory serves me right, I first encountered them on a tribute album dedicated to SYD BARRETT. How times change, but perhaps by listening to certain sounds from "Drop," the path was already laid out, and then with the subsequent revolutions of a certain type of British music, the transition was complete. What a shame!

"Drop," indeed just a drop in their discography, was recorded by the SHAMEN in 1987. Their trajectory, at a certain distance, reminds me of PRIMAL SCREAM.

A fine album of psychedelic pop with strong new wave influences. Nothing simpler, electronic drums, bass at the forefront, eternally affected guitars, and a vocal line that vaguely followed 60s melodic lines. Yet the formula worked and has held up respectably over the years.

Then ecstasy took over and everyone started dancing, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The good SYD with all those drugs would have felt at ease, but who knows musically? Starting from a BARRETT cover and ending up on a dance floor is quite a journey.

Nevertheless, a good album worth revisiting. Cheers!
