The Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in 1978, led by singer-songwriter Chrissie Hynde.

Formed in 1978 and led by Chrissie Hynde, early lineup included James Honeyman-Scott (guitar), Pete Farndon (bass) and Martin Chambers (drums). The band suffered the deaths and departures of founding members James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon in the early 1980s and continued under Hynde's leadership.
