THE REVIEW

I think we've all had those cinematic encounters...the kind where you see a girl one morning on the subway...then the glances meet...certain vis-a-vis pierce through like blades on skin. Usually, it ends there and you're left with a photograph stored in the closet of memory. Or something unexpected and dangerous begins. Like in the movie “The eternal sunshine of the spotless mind”...

One day, I stumbled upon an intriguing cover and an evocative title: “Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers”. The National are playing.

I listened to this record a lot and I loved it very much. The songs oscillate between singer-songwriter style and indie rock. The lyrics talk about difficult loves, illusions, and disappointments. About relationships never consummated and sleepless nights. About betrayal and jealousy. The confusion of roles.

The National have made many other records and I haven't listened to any others besides this one.

It took just one glance and you got inside me. Then the fear of disappointing you and disappointing myself.

And everything stopped at that instant.
