The Flying Burrito Brothers

Musical Group

Formed after Gram Parsons' departure from the Byrds (1968), The Flying Burrito Brothers — with Parsons, Chris Hillman, Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Chris Ethridge among early members — were pioneers of country rock. Their 1969 The Gilded Palace of Sin is widely cited as a cornerstone; subsequent albums include Burrito Deluxe (1970) and the 1971 self-titled record, which followed major lineup changes.

Gram Parsons coined or popularized the term "Cosmic American Music" in relation to the band's blend of country, soul and rock. Bernie Leadon later joined and would become a founding member of the Eagles. Rick Roberts later formed Firefall. Sneaky Pete Kleinow was the band's pedal steel player.

Reviews emphasize the band's role in pioneering country rock, led creatively by Gram Parsons. The Gilded Palace of Sin is described as a cornerstone album. Burrito Deluxe is viewed as more rock-leaning but still praised; the 1971 self-titled record reflects major lineup changes and a loss of the original spark.

For:Fans of country rock, Gram Parsons, classic American roots music and 1960s-70s rock listeners.

Gram Parsons became, by the end of the Sixties, the pioneer and spokesperson of "Cosmic American Music," which, in the artist's intentions, was meant to be a perfect combination of country, soul, and rock.
