Power and Technique defines this full-length CD by Testament, dated year 1999.
As the new millennium was knocking at the door, Chuck Billy's group placed on the market, in my opinion, their best album since "The Legacy." Free from some of the naiveties of their early days, "The Gathering" presents itself with its eleven tracks for over forty-two minutes of music as a mature and complex album in every respect, both in terms of composition and overall impact.
With a lineup that includes a certain Dave Lombardo (drummer of Slayer), the sound quality could not be anything but exceptional, supported by solid thrash school riffs, in which the Italian-American drummer inserts his powerful, precise, and effective drumming, backed by sharp double bass. The group skillfully and adeptly juggles, with the two guitars of Eric Peterson and James Murphy creating soundscapes that reinvent, in a modern way, the concept of playing metal in the 2000s by adapting it to the present (Machine Head, Soulfly, Slayer). "D.N.R.," "Down for Life" or the Slayer-like "Legion of the Dead" ignite the most furious headbanging, reminding the various throwaway modern bands what it means to play metal.
A must-have!!
We are faced with an album of unheard proportions.
A perfect album, where every track resounds in the stereo speakers in a resounding and destructive manner.
Awakening hour. A sonic earthquake that borders between Death and Thrash.
When people say Thrash died in 1991, remember that in 1999 it resurrected thanks to Testament.
Chuck Billy alternates his explosive voice with growls with ease; Patterson complements with his focused riffs that are both sharp and very fast.
An excellent thrash/speed/death metal album that doesn’t align with classic Testament yet represents the great new direction of Testament.
