"It's June, and I'm still wearing my boots": there couldn't have been a better time to listen to this record since it is June and it has been raining for two weeks, even if this is not New England but Lombardy.
"New England" is both a poetic and compelling track, Donnelly's voice is in great shape and the arrangement enhances its depth and lightness at the same time.
In "World On Fire" you can hear Throwing Muses-like choruses and pathos, but what stands out the most is Donnelly's songwriter vein.
"Kundalini Smile", a sweet ballad, perhaps suffers from repetitiveness but remains certainly very pleasant to listen to.
Better instead is "This Hungry Life", a poignant song accompanied by a delicate rhythmic section and well-placed strings and guitars.
"Littlewing" and "Days of Grace" add more liveliness to the album, while maintaining a harmonious continuity with the other tracks all in American songwriting style.
The last tracks, however, seem a bit anonymous, rushed.
"This Hungry Life" remains a good album, even if unfortunately little known.
