Dream Theater are great, Dream Theater are here, they're there, Dream Theater are gay... what a pain!!!
Buy this The Divine Wings Of Tragedy by Symphony X and you'll understand what Dream Theater really are: a bunch of wannabes!
This is true progressive metal, a beautiful mix of many great things. You'll find Pantera-style Thrash (the first track, Of Sins And Shadows, is a good example), the power-speed of Out Of The Shadows, clear classical-symphonic and neoclassical influences.
There is a 20-minute plus song that, hear this, DOES NOT BORE YOU AND DOES NOT MAKE YOU DROP YOUR JAW AFTER TWO MINUTES, like those of Dream Theater. There's a guitarist that makes Petrucci look like your neighbor's kid desperately trying to play Smells Like Teen Spirit, and a keyboardist who seems to have three hands given what he does.
And finally a technical singer, aggressive and angry, not like that tub of LaBrie, clearly a man by mistake. Now I can't compare Jason Rullo, who is nevertheless a beast, with Mike Portnoy or Thomas Miller to that dope Myung, but both are great, have a terrifyingly good feel, and I prefer them to the aforementioned gods.
Buy this CD and you'll realize that Dream Theater are not the best.
I would also like to emphasize the skill of Michael Romeo, perhaps the best metal guitarist in the world, his tapping scales are orgasmic (not to mention, his guitar has an amazing sound; harmonizers, wah, and other various things make it incredibly sharp but at the same time wonderfully saturated) and make a final little consideration: here it's not so much about skill triumphing but the ability to write engaging songs that are not just a guitar lesson.
Do you headbang listening to Dream Theater? I don't. With these guys, you will.
Symphony X have transcended the canons of prog-metal, with magnificent baroque and neoclassical arrangements.
The title suite, despite its 20:41 minutes, never bores, on the contrary, magniloquent and unpredictable, it almost seems the manifesto of this art.
"Of Sins and Shadows is my favorite song on the whole cd, excellent opening!"
"The Divine Wings of Tragedy suite... many good things but they are not enough to make it a good song."
"Definitely among the best power-prog albums of all time."
"The five Americans succeed in the goal of letting 20 minutes of song pass by while keeping the listener’s attention alive with quick theme changes and suggestive 'imperial' marches."
"Listening to it is like embarking on a fantastic journey, from which you don’t know if you will ever return."
"The Divine Wings of Tragedy is the masterpiece of a band with a distinctive and unique sound that stands out significantly from other prog-metal bands."
Symphony X makes technique an instrument of power!
"The Divine Wings Of Tragedy" is quite possibly the album where all these characteristics emerge in the right measure.
