To shake up and highlight a group's career and to achieve the much-coveted fame, it is necessary to make the so-called leap in quality, that is, the release of an album, or perhaps a single, that manages to win over thousands of fans and allows one to write their name in the book of rock history.
"Eye Of The Tiger" represents the album of commercial success for Survivor, an American band led by guitarist/keyboardist Jim Peterik, achieved mainly through the title track, released as a single and made known to the public as part of the soundtrack for the famous film Rocky III, dominating the Billboard magazine charts for 7 weeks and earning the group a Grammy Award.
The track offers a brisk, energy-packed rhythm that fits well with the movements of boxing. "Feels Like Love" compared to the previous track sees greater use of keyboards, especially in the chorus, and features a Peterik providing inspired and classy riffs, which would become his trademark. The following "Hesitation Dance" is a highly energetic song, starting with guitars in clear Ac/Dc style and very well interpreted by singer Dave Bickler.
"The One That Really Matters" is the third single selected by the band that confirms the melodic style at the start of the album and that touch of aggression provided by Peterik's guitar. "I'm Not That Man Anymore" brings a slight slowdown in rhythm, even though in the chorus the drums and Bickler's voice become more incisive, to give more emphasis to the melancholic tones of the piece.
The subsequent "Children Of The Night" gives back to the listener the energy and charge, once again guaranteed by the careful work of Peterik's guitar, leaving keyboards almost in the background. Keyboards which, however, turn out to be the protagonists of "Ever Since The World Began", a song with a strong sentimental and touching tone at some points, highlighting the talent in searching for engaging but never banal melodies of the American combo.
"American Heartbeat" the second single of the lot from the beginning characterized by almost futuristic keyboards and a chorus featuring vocals reminiscent of the Bee Gees. The album closes with the ballad "Silver Girl", with keyboards once again in the foreground, accompanied by an excellent solo by Peterik in the central part.
"Eye Of The Tiger" is remembered mainly for the great fame achieved by the eponymous single, but the rest of the album is certainly not inferior, offering great classy and very catchy AOR, which must not be missing in the collection of all lovers of the genre and of melodic and refined hard rock.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
01 Eye of the Tiger (04:06)
Risin' up, back on the street
Took my time, took my chances
Went the distance now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive
It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all
With the eye of the tiger
Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds still we take to the street
For the kill, with the skill to survive
It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all
With the eye of the tiger
Risin' up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive
It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all
With the eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
03 Hesitation Dance (03:52)
Like a vision standin' there,
Lips poutin', a come-on stare,
Come on -- I thought I had your number,
Workin' up an appetite for love,
Don't let me die of hunger,
Ain't ya got no heart,
No compassion for your lover,
When I get you on the floor, I find it's just another,
*Hesitation dance –
you got me in a stone-cold trance
Hesitation dance
Go out and find another fool
For your game of chance*
Shut the door, draw the blinds,
Yeah baby gonna draw the lines,
Come on, I know your heart's on fire,
How could anyone who plays the part
And tastes so sweet wanna hide her heart away,
You're my main desire --
Ain't you got no heart --
No compassion for your lover,
When I get you on the floor,
I find it's just another
( * Repeat)
06 Children of the Night (04:46)
Well we rifle through the night,
Like riders on the run now, in the street--
Holding back the blinding light,
'Cause a thousand eyes can be so indiscreet,
And we hide away, love the night away,
And we run between the shadows and the light,
*We're children of the night,
Runnin' from the light,
Children of the night,
Of the night, oh yeah.*
In the day we pass like strangers,
'Cause we fear the consequences of our love,
And we realize the danger,
Still we choose to take our chances on our love,
And we hide away, love the night away,
And we run between the shadows and the light,
( * Repeat)
There’s a fine line, such a fine line, a very fine--line,
Between the day and the nighttime,
The wrong and the right time, for makin' sweet love,
Find a place to hide, anyplace to hide, hidin' in the -- darkness,
Feels like the right time, for love in the nighttime,
For makin' sweet love.
07 Ever Since The World Began (03:46)
I'll never know what brought me here,
As if somebody led my hand,
It seems I hardly had to steer,
My course was planned.
And destiny it guides us all,
And by it's hand we rise and fall,
But only for a moment,
Time enough to catch our breath again.
And we're just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
How one live touches the other,
Is so hard to understand.
Still we walk this road together,
We travel through as far as we can,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began.
Taking in the times gone by,
We wonder how it all began,
We'll never know and still we
Try to understand.
And even though the seasons change,
The reasons shall remain the same,
It's love that keeps us holding on
Till we can see the sun again.
And we're just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began.
And I stand alone, a man of stone,
Against the driving rain,
And the night it's got your number,
And the wind it cries your name,
If we search for truth, win or lose,
In this we're all the same,
The hope still burns eternal,
We're the keeper of the flame.
And we're just another piece of the puzzle,
Just another part of the plan,
How one live touches the other,
Is so hard to understand.
Still we walk this road together,
We try and go as far as we can,
And we have waited for this moment in time,
Ever since the world began.
08 American Heartbeat (04:14)
The night's alive with wind and fire
We telegraph our heart's desire through the night with our eyes.
Wheels are tuniing fast and hard
hearts are burnin' on the Boulevard.
Hear them pound - young and proud:
It's the American heartbeat.
Chart the stars and head out for the action
Hit the streets and find some satisfaction.
It's the American heartbeat
it's the American heartbeat
Oh
the American heartbeat.
The stage is set
the roles are chosen.
The lights grow hot as the midnight's closin' in at last -
It comes so fast.
Poundin' harder as the midnight's strikin'
It hits us like a bolt of lightning.
Deeper down
it's the sound of the American heartbeat.
Chart the stars and head out for the action
Hit the streets an find some satisfaction.
It's the American heartbeat - young and proud
The American heartbeat - young and proud
American heartbeat
the American heartbeat
It's the American heartbeat
it's the American heartbeat
