The fact that the duo formula is in vogue is confirmed by the Super Wild Horses. The difference this time is that the components are two girls, drums and guitar, from Melbourne. When they founded the band two years ago, they could barely play. Now they come out with this “Fifteen” which offers the best 26 minutes of grrrl music (foxcore if you prefer) since the days of the Breeders led by Kim Deal and the Bikini Kill (speaking of when I was in kindergarten). Sorry if that seems like a small feat.
I’m a fan of the genre and I can say with certainty that this album extracts the best of these two bands: a garage-rock that makes simplicity of melodies its strong point, with an irresistible layer of sugary pop. The vocals are the same: provocative and flirtatious.
In short, lovers of women with guts will have no trouble falling for these twelve tracks. How can you resist the creeping progression of “Mess Around”? The melodic spirals of the title track or “Adrian,” rather than the acid-surf of “Love”? There's also the art rock spontaneity marked by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs of “Lock and Key.” The raw tenderness of the closing “Degrassi” – “Stranger by The Day” is disarming.
Thank you girls for making such a simple, immediate and beautiful album. You are my erotic dream. Well done, well done, well done.
