The Sunn O))) return with a new, powerful, symphonic, and grandiloquent work. Founded in Seattle by Stephen O’Malley (also known as a graphic designer for artists such as Melvins and Earth) and Greg Anderson, Sunn O))) have managed to create, over time, a unique sound called drone-metal, becoming a cult group in the field of contemporary art. In reality, aesthetically, we are not very far from ambient music and minimalism. The long drones that characterize their music generate a cathartic and hypnotic state in the listener, having much in common with the psychedelic experience. The eighth album is now out, featuring collaborations with names like Steve Albini, Icelandic cellist HILDUR GUÐNADÓTTIR, Tim Midyett, and experimenter Anthony Pateras. Life Metal, the title of the new work, was recorded as a kind of "live in studio" to better capture the essence and devastating power of their sound. Indeed, it is in live performances that Sunn O))) have achieved the greatest intensity and found their ideal dimension. We are thus faced with 4 minimalist and symphonic metal compositions that create an esoteric, menacing, and timeless aura. If you love the monotony typical of certain 70s German groups like Can, Sunn O))) might be right for you. Indeed, more than metal, I find myself associating their music with experimental rock groups like the Velvet Underground, at least on a compositional philosophy level. "Life Metal" confirms in any case the full value of the group and positions itself in the wake of their most inspired production. Available on Bandcamp: https://sunn.bandcamp.com/album/life-metal.
