Here is the return of the great guitarist, a student of Joe Satriani, and we must admit that this time he's come back with a real album worthy of being called such! Real Illusions: Reflections is a very recent release, so much so that until a short time ago, I didn't even know it had come out; fortunately, a friend of mine gave it to me for my birthday, and for this, I thank him very much.
The album might deserve even a 4.5, but I prefer not to go too far.

The CD features 11 tracks that demonstrate that our Steve has not lost his habit of writing songs with impressive technique but also with great melodic and energetic impact. For this work, he collaborated with the great Tony McAlpine (guitar and keyboards), his faithful side guitarist Dave Weiner, the exceptional bassist Billy Sheehan, and the fantastic drummer Jeremy Colson. Steve Vai, alongside these musicians, has created a unique and inimitable sound that immediately captures the attention from the first song "Building the Church," an instrumental piece played with a seven-string guitar that starts with a lick that immediately makes clear what the album offers. The great guitarist sings on more than one song, particularly in the fifth track "Firewall," where he perhaps slightly steps out of his usual genre; nonetheless, it's still a great piece that deeply engages the listener.
His usual experimental songs aren't missing, in fact, in "Yai Yai," using a particular form of wha-wha, he leaves everyone amazed and amused, listen to it, and you'll believe me!
In the sixth track "Freak Show Excess," Vai decides it's time to amaze even more with frequent time changes and variations, almost in a progressive style.

In conclusion, if you have to buy a CD this year, I recommend you buy Real Illusions: Reflections by the great Steve Vai!

(musica)
It's been a while since I knew you before
Hindsight says I was so much to blame
But even then, you possessed so much more
I buried my guilt under my fantasies

I never knew what it would do to you, oh my God
I dealt a hand and played with fate
But I still feel, and I surrender to, your intoxicant

But I want you to really know me
But when I try to get into your space

I run into your Firewall
Medusa's home
Built out of hurt and pain

Welcome to the
Firewall
If I get too close
I will go down in flames
Eh, just look at me now
I'm on fire.

And if I could, I would get down in your soul
And clean up the mess that I made
Maybe will and grace
Will replace your faith
And we can embrace

You'll never get to know me
Unless you
Let me touch your face

A victim of your Firewall
The devil's own
Destroy your enemies
I dance into your Firewall
When you're done, there'll be nothing left of me

Suck me into your flames, and let me burn deep down inside until
I...
