The terrifying and occult power kidnaps countless children. The safeguarding of public security demands the sacrifice of these innocents with prodigious potential. The theater of the massacre is the Institute, on stage the human beast. It is an obscenely worldly evil: a two-faced Janus with the visage of Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele. The public health apparatus is unstoppable, but the fire of revolt blazes – who was the province and who the empire is not the point: the point was the fire. Luke Ellis and his friends jam the gears of power.

The pages flow quickly. The path is straight, we do not face hairpin bends and ups and downs, only some ripples. The pronounced linearity and the flaws in the plot do not, however, compromise the pleasure of the reading. The children sprung from the King's pen represent the mirror of our childhood and move us.

Meanwhile, questions echo: how legitimate is it to offer to the God of public security? The head of some innocent? The suffering of the guilty? Following the totalitarian atrocity, the Leviathan has been constrained within the straitjacket of the Constitution: no collective interest can justify the suppression of human dignity. The sperm whale trembles. Nevertheless, the blood of Luke Ellis and his friends cannot be weighed on the cost/benefit scale. Human dignity, independent of any utilitarian function, is a non-negotiable value. An ought-to-be that diffuses into the complexity of a world stripped of magic.

Post scriptum. The daily chronicle overlaps with the King's pages. In recent weeks, the Strasbourg Court reminded us (Viola vs. Italy, life imprisonment and right to hope) that «human dignity, situated at the heart of the system created by the ECHR, prevents depriving a person of their liberty, without at the same time working for their reintegration and without giving them a chance to regain this liberty one day».
