After recording their second album, Machine, Koichi Fukuda (the guitarist) decided to leave the band to spend time with his family and pursue other musical opportunities. To replace Fukuda, Tripp Eisen was called upon, belonging to the former group Dope. Machine was released on May 22, 2001, and to achieve more success, shortly thereafter, Static-X began working on their third album, Shadow Zone, this time with Eisen's involvement. However, before they could start recording, Ken Jay left the group due to musical and political disputes and disagreements. Thus, as a provisional drummer, Josh Freese of A Perfect Circle and The Vandals was chosen. Later, Nick Oshiro, former member of Seether, was chosen as a replacement for Ken Jay and as the permanent drummer of the band. During the production of the album, Jonathan Davis from KoRn called Wayne Static as a singer for one of his songs written for the soundtrack of the film "Queen of the Damned," titled "Not Meant For Me." Shadow Zone was later released on October 7, 2003.

Wow, what a great start with "Destroy All," as usual, they're angry, they want to destroy everything right away, but luckily self-control intervenes, "Control It," wonderful, beautiful, the first gem of the album. But here it is, right when the anger is tamed with hate and certainly not with love...a new pain arrives, "New Pain," I see shadows and a great pain in my head, you told me what you wanted and you hated me, then you killed me, but I didn't die because of you: my heart and mind were already on fire before. "Shadow Zone," I fell into the shadow, but I'm not sad, in fact, I like this darkness, leave me alone, inside I am dead, my mind, my heart...right decision, or wrong, this is the cause of my anger. "Dead World," something in me is changing, what's happening to me? where am I? I am alone, this world is dead, and since I am the only living being, this is my world, I am the king of this bleak and dark world. Returned to reality, out of my shadow I have become a monster, "Monster," I see all lies in your eyes! I step out of the story I improvised while listening to the tracks to say that up to this point, the songs have all been great, but now comes the crown jewel: "The Only," wonderful, sweet but powerful, I have no words to describe it briefly, I consider it the best song they've made so far. Even "Kill Your Idols" is beautiful. So far, the album has proven exceptional, both angry and melodic. We keep ourselves well above average with "All In Wait," this one is also very nice. And after everyone has been waiting, here comes this turn's "Otsego," "Otsegolectric" which isn't bad, indeed it's much better than the previous "Otsego". "So" is the calmest and most melodic song of the bunch, sad, sweet, and melancholy, but its sweetness has captivated me, I cannot dislike it. Wayne takes a minute and a half break with the instrumental piece "Transmission." And here, the last gem, my second absolute favorite, the wonderful and spectacular "Invincible,"

"I'm trying to do the right thing...it's right...all my life I've been in the cold...now I feel nothing...leave me to learn...leave me to hurt...now I'm not so invincible...this will happen when you know..."
