A strange and fascinating character, Jason Molina. The sole guardian of the Songs: Ohia moniker, he took his first steps in the Cleveland heavy metal scene, but soon focused his efforts on the exploration and experimentation within American tradition.
Very often, Neil Young is mentioned as his mentor and Will Oldham as his alter-ego. Molina (even the homonymy with Ralph of Crazy Horse...) plays a lot in this field, dangerously approaching and then immediately rejecting the similarities with these two artists, he writhes, he gets agitated and soon feels the lack of common roots.
In this live performance, recorded at Barchessone Vecchio in San Martino Stino (Mo) in September 2000, he surrounds himself with a real band and relinquishes the spotlight of the six-string to Dan Sullivan (of Nad Navillius), focusing on his sublime fragile voice, which sometimes seems to stumble over its own words. Five unreleased tracks (all titled "Untitled") and three stripped-down reinterpretations ("Tigress", "Being In Love" and "Cabwaylingo") compose this work, released in 2001 by Papercup/White+Black, where he paints a tribute to slowness, riding across the boundless American prairies, in the evening at twilight.
The image of a stunning purple sunset insinuates itself into our brains, with gentle leaden clouds standing out on the horizon, towards which we head, without haste... in perfect symbiosis with the animal that gently moves forward at a walking pace. But with the uncertainty of feelings that melancholically tear at our hearts, deep inside...
Tigress "it's difficult not to worry about what happens next certain looks sort out confused looks and certain looks sport confused looks and I watched us talking in the mirror and you put on that look that says this little star wishes she weren't single it is the eye that catches me a man protesting his worth it is the year that catches you putting the shake on your words you are alert as a tigress at a common table with her fate you can almost taste it we'll be gone be morning or be together by then(x2) and I believe every woman has made up her mind to win"
"Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma" is one of the highest points of modern American singer-songwriter music.
