Arriving at this site, I was surprised to find only one review of the legendary Stayer, those who, along with Metallica, Exodus… contributed to the development of the THRASH BAY AREA. So here we go...
This latest work from Slayer was released on September 11, 2001 (what luck…), and the lineup was the same as in the past Divine Intervention and Diabolus in Musica, with Tom Araya on bass and vocals, the two axes Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, and the immense Paul Bostaph on drums, who almost makes you not miss the days of Dave Lombardo(!).
The tracks are mostly in the Thrash style, although there is a strong Hardcore component present throughout the album. It starts with Darkness of Christ, an unusual intro, placed there to deceive us into thinking this will be a calm album (so to speak) like Diabolus in Musica. Nothing could be further from the truth... here Slayer are angrier than ever and they demonstrate it with the super fast and technical Disciple. Then follow good, fast tracks like God Send Death, New Faith, Exile, and then the stunning mid-tempo Bloodline (which was part of the soundtrack of Dracula 2000), then Warzone, and finally the super fast Payback, which in the beginning recalls the classic Angel of Death.
King and Hanneman deliver a good performance, frequently indulging, as is tradition, in fast solos, as does Araya, who appears in great shape, even though he is accused of singing too filtered, and Bostaph, who is super fast and gifted with an exquisite technique, delights us with a drumming that in my opinion is much more varied than that of good old Dave.
A good album, even if inferior to the first 5 masterpieces. The Californian combo thus set an example of a group that knows how to renew itself album after album.
Go buy it, and it will be the nourishment for your daily headbanging for a long time!!!!!!
The album is full of anger, violence, hatred, and disapproval... the solos are anything but melodic, once again confirming how Slayer is a "massacre-band."
"God Hates Us All aligns with the other excellent CDs produced by the band, even if it doesn't reach the songwriting levels of Reign in Blood."
