Among the albums that every true heavy music lover should cherish, "Roots" by the Brazilian band Sepultura occupies one of the top positions. The CD released in 1996 under Roadrunner presents the Brazilian band in a completely new light. For the recording of the album, the group spent a long period in close contact with a real tribe near Mato Grosso (Brazil), influencing and contaminating the robust thrash metal played in the past with tribal and percussive sounds, consistently with what had already been done in the previous album ("Kaiowas").
After the opening track "Roots Bloody Roots", it is already clear that we are dealing with something damn powerful and intense, thanks to the charisma of Max Cavalera's "Leonine" voice; "Attitude" clarifies to everyone what the group's new influences are, new sounds assault the unsuspecting listener blending everything with very solid metal riffs "Cut Throat". "Ratamahatta" with its various influences is the most significant track of this new course, opened by Xavantes choruses, surrounded by various percussionists, the track unleashes all its power. Special guests like Mike Patton (Faith No More/Tomahawk) and Jonathan Davis (Korn), give us intense emotions ("Lookaway"), enhancing the added value of an album that is in itself unique in its genre.
One takes a breath with instrumental tracks ("Jasco/Itsari") that prepare us for the final assault. After the release of the CD, there were real discontents from those who did not appreciate the tribal turn, preferring the "pure" atmospheres of the previous albums. The internal disagreements were so great that the band had to part ways with its singer, who in continuity with the sound of "Roots", went on to form Soulfly. The remaining Sepultura members (including brother Igor on drums) would not be able to reach their former glories over the years, producing adequate albums. The overall sound curated by Ross Robinson and Andy Wallace is appropriate, as it enhances the group's aggressive power while valuing the clarity of sound. The digipack version contains a Black Sabbath cover ("Symptom of the Universe"), a live track ("Kaiowas"), and a techno/jungle experiment ("Chaos B.C.")
Essential!!
Roots, the masterpiece from the boys of Belo Horizonte, marks the conclusion of a journey embarked upon by Max, Igor, Andreas, and Paulo Jr.
An extreme metal in a 'Brazilian' key as never seen before and probably never will be seen again.
Roots grips the listener from the first to the last killer riff, containing everything one would expect from a masterpiece.
The only flaw of this album is that it is the last of Sepultura with Max in the lineup; without him, they will never create another album so ingenious and beautiful!
