Long live Italy, long live Italy, long live Italy, long live Italy!!!!!!!!!
There's nothing to do. The more I listen, the more I like it.
I had subdued my diabolical thrash instincts for a long time, also because the market was churning out many, too many, countless crap. Starting with the big names (excluding Testament), really, I had decided not to listen to extreme metal anymore. This was because it was grinding my balls in an impressive way.
Then one fine day, I receive an album with a moniker that says it all: “Sentenza”. The name of the same band that gives its all in the self-titled album. Power, aggression, ferocity, tenacity, technique, brutality. The requirements are all there, the ingredients are dosed just right, without overdoing or overreaching, delivering a perfect thrash-death metal album with all the attributes.
The band really goes hard, hits in an absurd way, and right from the opener shows us everything that was worth bringing this album to life: speed, technique, melodies, and kick-ass action.
Beautiful and thrilling “Follow Me”, built on fast and killer riffs, with Igor, behind the mic, in a full state of grace in every episode of the album and with the dual axes (formed by Matteo and Alessandro) who manage to understand each other perfectly.
It's not worth going on a track by track, because the songs are perfect. Sharp riffs and fast and melodic solos. I don’t know if, amongst all this goodness, I’d be able to single out the track that stands out among the ten that make up the collection. I would venture to say “Human Brutality” for its “brutality” and its truly overwhelming refrain (where an angry Igor screams like a madman “Here Satan!!!”) and the wonderful “Black Woman” built on melodic arpeggios that pave the way for all the wickedness that Sentenza then manages to unleash.
A final applause goes to the rhythm section, particularly applause to Michele, who beats his instrument hard behind the skins.
The last note goes to the lyrics, which are never idiotic or self-serving, but engaged with topics that talk about “… social issues and the various life paths that leave various scars in our flow” (Igor).
In conclusion: an album that does not bore, alternating excellent fast songs with nice mid-tempos; songs where technique is always evident. Songs where the solos will make your brains shoot out of your nose (listen to “Escape From My Mind” to believe it). Songs that will make you scream: “Fuck! This is thrash metal!”.
Make it yours.
