"At times, it seems to me that my blood flows like a fountain in rhythmic sobs. I feel it trickling with a long murmur, but I search in vain for a wound." (C. Baudelaire)
A sculpture of flesh, blood, and ice, an effigy of anguish, a genuine ceremony of suicide. They are Sentenced; true, gothic, and Scandinavian Suicidal Metal.
"Frozen" is the band's jewel, a work that rediscovers the darkest themes related to human existence, lyrics that only the darkest imagination can conceive. Words like "misery", "grave", "pain", "kill", obsessively expressed in the songs, are as fresh as snow in the morning.
The atmosphere darkens and crystallizes immediately with "Kaamos", then "Farewell" takes a path that denies reconciliation with oneself and digs a deep trench of perdition. The dark imprint of tracks like "Dead Leaves" awakens the most unnatural instincts, followed by the perverse harmony of "For the Love I Bear".
The voice of Ville Laihiala is first clear, then morbid, then delirious with guilty madness in the track that for me is the masterpiece of the album: "The Suicider", the triumph of the self-celebration of death; gut-wrenching tones, penetrating to the bones like winter air, a heavy scourge, a clear violation of the mind. "The Rain Comes Falling Down" is a sleet that veils the eyes overwhelmed by damnably seductive visions; then it is again suggestion, mystical and unreal scenarios are painted, frozen and depressing, in the purity that becomes coldness of "Grave Sweet Grave", and again, thanks to the female participation in "Burn", accompanied by death overtones and flaming melodies.
The impact is sometimes exhausting and traumatic, especially in "Drown Together", where hope is returned in the form of a piece of skin forcibly ripped from the body. The concluding instrumental "Mourn" is a hailstorm of sounds, where the music always manages to suffocate any impulse towards the resurrection of the soul and the redemption of the spirit, and ecstasy is completed.
"I have seen my funeral in a thousand dreams..."
