Are we facing yet another revival group? It seems like it, especially today when the revival trend is cannibalizing everything, forcing us to rehash the same old material.
And yet, perhaps it's true that in rock, nothing is truly invented. And so we can admit that these three Texans transplanted to NY hit the mark. Their recipe is quite simple: it's based on American indie rock of the '90s (with Pavement leading the way, but also Grandaddy, and shall we not include the Flaming Lips?) and then new wave - of course! - (see Light's On), all immersed in an enveloping psychedelic magma, which expands the guitar and drum riffs and the pulsating bass into pieces that take on the form of hypnotic suites (First Wave Intact, as well as the concluding title-track).
But beware, this album is not lacking in bite. The guitar sounds, warm and enveloping, also know how to scratch when needed, and the rhythm, from hypnotic, can suddenly become urgent and powerful. One of the best tracks is the bluesy Sad and Lonely, while worth mentioning are Nowhere Again, The Road Leads Where It's Lead and the two aforementioned tracks, the first and the last, the two longest and most complex.
The entire album exudes consistency, and a steady hand that shows how clear the boys' ideas are; the songs flow smoothly and are all enjoyable. If we want to find a flaw, the reason we don't give it five stars, it's the lack of a track that particularly grabs attention. Perhaps a surge of tension wouldn't have been a bad thing. But we like these Secret Machines even as they are.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
02 Sad and Lonely (04:40)
Did you get your heartache and your head rush confused?
Have you been sleeping late 'cause you've been abused?
Are you alone?
Does it feel like those around want you to die?
Are you alive?
Did you grab your sleeping bag when you hit the floor?
Have you been feeling bad 'cause you've been a bore?
You're just lonely
And it feels like those around want you to die
You're alive
Was it loneliness that kept you or baby did you think it a curse?
Or were you grateful for the pleasure or baby do you think this is worse?
And it feel like those around want you to die
Well, sometimes does it feel like just crying
Youre still in love with me and you dont know why
