LA RECENSIONE

In 1981, Roger Taylor made his debut with "Fun On Space", momentarily freeing himself from the democratic drapes of the mother group, within which in the years to come

he would become one of the most successful authors, contributing with "Radio Ga Ga" to the commercial rebirth of the group, after the misstep of "Hot Space".

Besides having a splendid hoarse voice, comparable to a mix between Rod Stewart and Steve Perry, and playing the drums, he shows decent skills also on guitar, bass, and keyboards.

The album in question is essentially a scattered collection of tracks that Roger has recorded in almost perfect solitude over recent years, except for the presence of a guitarist and Jeff Beck in the already published "Say It's Not True".

Lyrically, the album presents moments less inspired compared to others where the emotions and bitterness of the singer towards his government take over (The Unblinking Eye).

Among the most fitting tracks, certainly the ballad "Sunny Day", which we can all imagine in a contemporary Queen album with Freddie on vocals.

As already mentioned, the mini protest opera "The Unblinking Eye", with a furious interpretation and full of bitter comments on the state of the art of politics in his country.

To note the revival of "Smile", already present in the disappointing album in collaboration with Paul Rodgers, here the track interpreted by Taylor alone benefits.

The presence of the sax, a rarely used instrument by Queen, is also notable, hence the wild "I am the Drummer (in a Rock'n'Roll band)".

Precisely because of its nature as a collection, both the compactness and quality suffer, both present in the more successful solo albums "Happiness?" and "Electric Fire".

For completists.
