Rating: Before you ask me: no, if Robert had not died of cancer last week, I probably would not have reviewed what remains, to this day, his best song in my opinion. Or rather, I don't know. "Everyday Life" (1997) I like it, I like it a lot, I've always liked it.
Once, on his official FB page, I wrote to him. "Roberto, sorry to bother you. I wanted you to know how much I love 'Everyday Life'". Reply: "I also had a lot of fun making it!". Fun. After the feast of "Children" and company, Robert Miles, born Roberto Concina, simply thought about having fun. Ergo, composing, producing and publishing the music he liked, not necessarily for the airwaves.
A genius, an innovator, a destined talent. I say: a practical, essential musician, who chose to refine himself and to express his innermost self rather than embracing the purely dance-oriented and underground trend of the late '90s.
In "Everyday Life", the second single from the second album "23 A.M", all the elements that, in the opinion of the writer, must come together to make an electronic music track enjoyable, well-structured, and homogeneous converge. A synthetic drum set played with wisdom; an intro that reflects on itself and the body of the song but never in a banal way; an expressive but not languid vocalist; keyboards and synths without frugality; a keen ear and direction changes at the right moment. So: a gentle song with an aggressive imprint, an intriguing text that hints at a hybrid between invocation, prayer, and veiled atheism.
Those who read me know: boom-boom singles rarely win me over. "Children" is no exception to the rule. Nice, but that's it. Better "One-On-One", for example. Let's not fool ourselves: Miles left the scene shortly after "Children". He became niche, he became a legend. Ah, yes, that one who... and they sing you the chorus, which many don't even remember the title of.
Rest in peace, Robert. Wherever you are.
