Richie Havens (born Richard Pierce Havens; January 21, 1941 – April 22, 2013) was an American folk musician known for his warm, smoky voice and rhythmic open‑tuned guitar playing.

Opened Woodstock (August 15, 1969); noted for open tunings, thumb strumming and foot‑drum rhythm technique; famous for his improvised rendition of "Freedom" during "Motherless Child".
