Are you familiar with early Pantera and Machine Head? Well, in my opinion, along with Sepultura and a few others, they are the true godfathers of nu-metal in the metal sense of the term. If we disregard the hip-hop temptations, the guitar sound and attitude of the most famous bands in the genre actually come from these bands (who also had a handful of epic riffs stolen from them). Let's get to the point with the Italian band Relaypse, who in four tracks demonstrate their love for nu-metal sounds by building a bridge between these two generations of bands.
The opener "I Try" lives on compressed riffing juxtaposed with frantic notes, "flying" electronics, and an angry voice + various insane backing vocals. Not bad, even if it's not original. However, I like the use of the voice and the guitar solo (now that's a rarity these days!). "Not King" also moves along the same lines with a nice bass attack. "Go Away," on the other hand, is a rather convincing mid-tempo with an excellent band "ensemble" performance that shows a good harmony. Perhaps the best is saved for last with a "Lost for the Victory" (c'mon c'mon) that closes the work with a burst of aggression and a good melodic chorus.
Not a bad start, I'm curious to see which direction they will take in the future (more metalcore or more nu-metal?).
We'll find out in May 2004, the month of the release of their album "Mexico."
