It’s been a while since I've been nervously wandering around the shops in the center of Milan looking for something new to listen to, a band like those of the past that sparked your passion, made you feel close to the underground scene and sometimes part of it. It’s been quite some time since, without the internet or p2p, we (us poor loser metalheads) would gather on the release day of an album, crowding the gallery near the Duomo, hoping that by the time our turn came, the album wouldn't be sold out... ah, those were the days... Don’t ask me why, but listening to the debut album by Relaypse Mexico brought that period to mind.
Overall, the album has excellent sounds, especially the guitar, but in general, the mixing is of excellent quality. It opens with Mexico, which has a very modern flavor (System of a Down, but especially Godsmack) with repeated stop and go rhythms, out-of-control backing vocals, and a chorus that I just can’t get out of my head (ai aiiia i ai ai ai aiiii...Mexicooo). It continues with I Try, which is a risk of an accident if listened to in the car, just like Not King, but the best is yet to come. Discotheque showcases the band's entire experimental energy, a journey that I didn’t quite understand but didn’t disappoint me at all (a great chorus here too). The album closes with three tracks, among which stand out Go Away (where the singer showcases his interpretative skills), Devon (very Patton-esque in its entirety), and Lost For The Victory, which is the anthem/theme of the Italian wrestling federation.
Ultimately, an excellent album that I recommend to lovers of unknown but talented metal/crossover bands.
