Remember Kahimi Karie?
Listeners of "Ruggito del Coniglio," the legendary morning show on Radio 2 (RAI), know her well, as her hit "Una Giapponese A Roma" is often played. A cult of the trashiest trash the human ear has ever heard.
Well, Kahimi — "queen of the Japanese movida" — was the girlfriend of Keygo Oyamada, aka Cornelius, and today she is one of the stars produced by his label, "Trattoria Records."
What's the connection?, Di Pietro might immediately ask. None, but we liked introducing this 30-year-old from Tokyo (Cornelius, indeed) and his beautiful CD "Point" in this way.
Now: we've always loved slightly crazy characters, outsiders, the eclectic-genius types, and Japan seems particularly blessed with them (among all: "Beat" Takeshi Kitano).
Point, as we were saying. "Eclectic" is the word. It includes everything from the cover of "Brazil" to "I hate hate," a piece for die-hard metalheads.
Yet, the whole is incredibly organic, and in the end, it results in an album that is difficult to label.
The only thing that can be said is that it's a reasoned bibliography on everything that has been heard around lately.
Great.
