LA RECENSIONE

Cornelius makes us feel the Japanese alternative. A small masterpiece that unfortunately not everyone is familiar with. Yet, one of his videos did arrive in Italy, but those that aired on MTV at two in the morning (and not anymore now).

In this album, we find a high influence of “natural” sounds, in the truest sense of the word. It's evident from the final surf of “Smoke,” which is a sort of funky-like track in an odd time signature (the electro-noise solo and the break and resumption are beautiful), and it's evident from the famous “Drop,” with the video featuring the gurgling of water chosen as the base to keep the rhythm with the guitar and various keyboard atmospheres. Speaking of “Drop,” it's truly a well-executed track, both in terms of composition and sound, a very enjoyable track. Also noteworthy is “Tone Twilight Zone,” immersed in a dark countryside to the sound of crickets and frogs; I imagine it in front of the full moon with its unique guitar loop and okay atmospheres. “Bird Watching at Inner Forest” too takes us back into a forest, with samples of parrot whistles and a typical Brazilian tempo. In fact, two tracks later there's a cover of “Brazil.” But there's also room for Cornelius's compositional tendencies of crescendos and obsessions (almost his trademark), as heard in “Point of View Point” and “I Hate Hate,” certainly the most violent and frantic track on the album and also the one most outside the album's theme (full metal). To leave nothing out, let's add the strings, trombones, and supersonic organ-like sounds closing “Nowhere,” and the package is complete.

But you might think: will this amalgamation of instruments, sounds, and whatever else go well together? Well, I think they do; there's not a single track made randomly in this album, and everything flows smoothly to the listener's ears. Cornelius's oddities impress, even when he uses “violence,” gently. Very well-recorded.

The whole is incredibly organic, and in the end, it results in an album that is difficult to label.

It’s a reasoned bibliography on everything that has been heard around lately.
