Dischord is one of those labels that have indelibly marked the history of music, of music done right, of course. Dischord and its boss could easily be objects of worship because they have concretely done much more for mankind than Jesus Christ and are still bursting with vitality. I know little about the music born from Dischord, and I had even decided to let it go its own way without too much remorse (why I don't know, don't ask too many questions) until a little bird, who plays the bass as if he were forging Excalibur to be embedded in the stone, told me: << Dude, you can't not listen to them... trust me, they'll totally resonate with you. >>
Said and done, they resonate with me in a big way.
However, Grippe is not the masterpiece. The MASTERPIECE of Jawbox (with all the capital letters and dots in the right place) is the subsequent Novelty. Novelty smashes from here to Australia; this one is cool, but Novelty contains 90% of the music that will come from '92 onwards. This one is cool and buries all those '90s hardcore bands (okay, great, it doesn't take much, but they did it, right?) and that's enough.
Grippe is their first album. Melodic hardcore that flows smoothly and is a pleasure according to the writer (if I were a so-called critic, I would say post-hardcore with a splash of indie-rock, but I have too much (or too little) respect for myself). Of course, nothing new under the sun; Husker Du had already made history, I remember the Descendents too, but who cares... how many fast, adrenaline-filled, tight albums made in a trio (with Novelty, a second guitarist joins in), that you can even sing from start to finish without too much effort, do you know? There you go, silence. One hand to count and the other in your pocket.
In short, cutting to the chase, it's official: a band that might resonate with me in the best way possible, and that counts.
