The Profile

Jawbox is an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C., formed in 1989 by J. Robbins (ex–Government Issue). After two albums on Dischord Records they moved to Atlantic, releasing For Your Own Special Sweetheart and Jawbox before disbanding in 1997; they later reunited.

Origin: Washington, D.C., U.S. Members: J. Robbins (vocals, guitar), Kim Coletta (bass), Bill Barbot (guitar, vocals), Adam Wade and later Zach Barocas (drums). Labels: Dischord Records; Atlantic/Tag. Signature track: “Savory.”

Three enthusiastic reviews trace Jawbox’s rise from Dischord-era urgency (Grippe, Novelty) to major-label precision (For Your Own Special Sweetheart). Tracks like Savory, Motorist, and Cooling Card get singled out for sharp riffs and melodic punch. The writers praise the band’s post-hardcore evolution, nimble rhythms, and hook-smart vocals. Overall verdict: essential 90s D.C. noise with brains.
