1986
An important year for hard music in general. America, overwhelmed by the thrash metal of the Bay Area from Testament & Co., still had a small remnant of punk from the seventies. After the farewell of the Clash, the Ramones were the only ones from the magical punk trilogy who supported this genre with conviction.
The Ramone brothers, after the good "Too Tough To Die", rolled up their sleeves and in 1986 released "Animal Boy". The album was very well received by both critics and fans, thus achieving another great success. The album is also excellently supported by the various hits it presents, such as "Somebody Put Something In My Drink", "Something To Believe In", and the criticized "Bonzo Goes To Bitburg".
The band's sound, as usual, remained the same, namely the classic "one, two, three, four" and the fast three distorted chords of Johnny Ramone. Even though "Animal Boy" features a beautiful ballad named "She Belongs To Me", not to be confused with the Bob Dylan song of the same name...
The quartet also got a nice satisfaction by reaching second place with the video "Something To Believe In", only beaten by "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel, which won the best video clip award of 1986!
The album opener is the gritty "Somebody Put Something In My Drink", (even covered by Children Of Bodom!), and it's a track that with its impact, opens "Animal Boy" in a surprising way. A really distinctive and easily memorable refrain right from the first listens. A great punk rock track, which all these little bands nowadays should listen to..
The title track makes the sound heavier and even faster, reaching almost proto-hardcore patterns, enhanced by the beautiful performance of the entire band. "Love Kills" is a furious, almost neurotic song, where Dee Dee can showcase his frantic and angry voice.
"She Belongs To Me" is a sensational ballad that, together with the magnificent "She Talks To Rainbows" from "Adios Amigos", I would define as one of the most beautiful ballads by the Ramones brothers! Joey has an incredible voice, managing to convey emotions every second, while Joey shows his skills also in playing the classical guitar, a somewhat unusual instrument for him. Great song, great love lyrics, and a great passionate refrain!
"Bonzo Goes To Bitburg"! This piece is a bitter accusation the band makes towards the American President Reagan, who in that year visited the military cemetery at Bitburg. Besides this detail, the song is one of the group's most beautiful, the feeling among the musicians is truly impressive, and the famous chorus is emotional, endowed with a perfectly fitting dose of melody. Something truly exceptional, which seems to anticipate the success of the equally fortunate "Pet Semetary"!
After the rather modest "Hair Of The Dog", we finally reach the celebrated "Something To Believe In", which has the honor of closing this interesting work. This track has excellent vocal melody by Joey, which surely adds a pinch of originality to the song, exploding in the sublime refrain, accompanied by perfect backing vocals. (In the video, in fact, you can see that in "Something To Believe In" many artists also participated, contributing to beautifying the song even more).
What else can I say? Listen to the Ramones and hear "Animal Boy", which as you may have read is another great work by the band, containing songs that have immortalized the history of the legendary Ramones!!
TIME HAS COME TODAY!!
