This Mutter is undoubtedly the definitive consecration of Rammstein, who have developed a new and original sound that grows and evolves album after album.
Let's start by saying that this album is and will probably remain the best album made by R+, slightly more inspired than the more recent Reise Reise and Rosenrot. To be clearer, I'll analyze track by track:
1 Mein Herz Brennt: An atypical opener compared to Rammstein's industrial standards: no big riffs or guitar strumming, calm drums; the song still appears energetic thanks to the fundamental support of the Dresden Symphony Orchestra (awarded an Echo for this song as "Best Debut Recording").
2 Links 234: Smooth song, marked by a military march in the background. A note on the lyrics: Before the last chorus, the singer pronounces these words: "They want my heart on the right side, then you look below and it beats on the left, the envious ones didn't know it well", this to underline the continual and unfounded alleged accusations of extreme right-wing political affiliation.
3 Sonne: A song that starts with an alarming countdown and then explodes into a mix of power and solemnity accentuated by the ever-present voice of the Teutonic singer Bobo.
4 Ich Will: An urgent song, with egocentric lyrics, and a chorus made to be sung along with the audience in the now-famous live shows of the sextet.
5 Feuer frei!: A very thrilling song with high-paced rhythms and devilish riffs, bone-crushing drums, and... fire galore!
6 Mutter: Title track relatively calm, a ballad with a melancholic and bitter taste, further emphasized by the melodic accompaniment of the well-known violinist Olten Involsini.
7 Spieluhr: A happy-ending poem in rhyme accompanied by impeccable guitars and a chorus made even more effective by double vocals.
8 Zwitter: An impactful track, with fast and melodic guitars, perhaps the most catchy song of the entire album.
9 Rein reus: Energetic and smooth song, with xxx lyrics and a riff that captures you from the first listen.
10 Adios: A very complete track, alternating moments of calm with acoustic guitar to the granite strumming of the chorus.
11 Nebel: A song that starts quietly, then reveals itself to be energetic and captivating, then closes the album in tranquility.
Finally, what can I say? Well, for sure, Rammstein have proven once again to be up to the task with a surgical and meticulously crafted production and.... well, let me get back to rocking out....
"Ich bin der Reiter, du bist das Ross"...
