Anger is a nasty beast. But it is still a human feeling, like love, joy, sadness, surprise, fear. And as such, it is a source of inspiration, sometimes too much so.
Just as a lover feels the need to write down everything they feel in a poem to dedicate to their beloved, an angry person needs to vent somehow because otherwise, they know they'll end up exploding. Some people vent by grabbing a golf club and energetically smashing everything in their path, some kick the dog, and there are those who, if they can afford it, record an album. And this is the case with Raging Speedhorn, who return to the scene after a monumental album like "We Will Be Dead Tomorrow", which from the title alone left little doubt about their attitude.
They return this time with "How The Great Have Fallen", which reminds me of what Jack Black said about Tenacious D in his School Of Rock. Rock means destroying the powerful, annihilating authority. You don't know the powerful? They're everywhere. In the streets, at the White House. There was something capable of destroying the powerful, it was called rock'n'roll. But guess what, oh no. The powerful corrupted even that with a little thing called MTV. And this "How The Great Have Fallen" is not just an attack on the powerful, but a true anthem to anger. There's a deep black fury at the core of every track. Words screamed from tonsils frustrated by everyday life, heavy riffs repeated to exhaustion, disregarding the eardrums of those who will listen to them. If you love Black Flag, you probably have a little idea of what awaits you. Nothing else important to say. There's nothing to discuss here. There's not even a need to attempt to specify the group's genre: a sort of heavy, tremendously metallic hardcore? For sure there's no trace here of emo melodic compromises or Swedish death metal that are so trendy today among hardcore bands. Here lies the fierce and uncompromising attitude of Hatebreed, if not more.
Here, there's nothing to do but give in to anger and headbanging, to the granitic riffs of "Fuck You Pay Me", "Slay The Coward", "The Infidel Is Dead", or to the faster and almost catchy ones of "Master Of Disaster" and "Oh How The Great Have Fallen" (pay particular attention to the dual growl vocals).
Happy headbanging.
