The "in-between" album... That's how Radiohead fans describe it. You can notice that something has changed since Pablo Honey, but the shift of OK Computer hasn't happened yet. A beautiful and simple album that you always listen to with pleasure, but deep down you know they've gone beyond... they've done better. There are no songs written just to fill space; each has its own logic and independent life. The days of Creep are long gone, now they rely on rock ballads like The Bends, Fake Plastic Trees, Just, and My Iron Lung. However, there is something strange in the air, and you can sense it from songs like Bullet Proof and Street Spirit...
For some, it is the most beautiful Radiohead CD, far from the paranoias of OK Computer; in my opinion, it is a splendid precursor, but it's not a complete novel, while still remaining a magnificent CD. What this CD lacks is pain; it's all a bit too beautiful... only in Street Spirit do the eyes begin to open. I would give it a 4 and a half, but since I can't, I prefer to be generous and round it up: 5!
"'Fake Plastic Trees' and 'Street Spirit' are absolute masterpieces included in THE BENDS."
"This album gathers the entire essence of the sound that characterized Radiohead."
It was extraordinary to talk about poetry while the wine was taking effect, the cigarettes burning themselves out, and High and Dry was sliding freely and sweetly through the room.
That night I spent awake with eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling, the lamp with its soft light, and Street Spirit in my ears rocking me like a lullaby.
"Fake Plastic Trees is the most beautiful Radiohead song I have ever heard!"
"An album that even after years remains current. Absolute masterpiece!"
"The Bends captures that tragedy, that drama, that sense of ambiguous despair that slices and tears the skin off you while making you believe you’re soaking in a pool."
"The Bends is what separates the overtaking from the crash, a moment when adrenaline should ignite the heart, but instead a gas embolism arrives just before the accident."
