The Profile

Pure Reason Revolution are a British progressive rock group formed in Reading by Jon Courtney and Chloe Alper. Debuting with The Dark Third (2006), they explored a blend of prog, indie, and electronics across Amor Vincit Omnia (2009) and Hammer and Anvil (2010) before a hiatus. Reformed in 2018, they released Eupnea (2020), Above Cirrus (2022), and Coming Up To Consciousness (2024).

English indie-prog/electronic-rock band from Reading; core members include Jon Courtney and Chloe Alper; opened for Porcupine Tree; initial run 2003–2011, reformed in 2018; noted for layered vocal harmonies, abrasive guitars, and synth-driven textures.

DeBaser’s reviews trace Pure Reason Revolution from the spacey debut The Dark Third to the energized comeback of Eupnea and Above Cirrus, praising their abrasive guitars, layered harmonies, and psychedelic-electronic blend. The darker, punchier edges draw comparisons to Tool in moments, while short and long forms both earn notice. The latest Coming Up To Consciousness is seen as stripped down and less compelling, missing some of the band’s trademark bite. Overall, the band’s hybrid of prog, indie, and electronics remains the defining thread.
